Kishalay — Shibori Tie-Dye Cotton Saree in Green

Kishalay is soft mulmul cotton — the light, breathable weave you can wear from morning to evening in peak summer and barely register the weight of. What makes it worth a second look is the colour and the way it got there.

• THE COLOUR
  Bright leaf-green — not the bottle, emerald or sage that most green sarees settle into, but the lighter, yellower green of new growth. It reads fresh rather than heavy, and it's a shade you come across less often on a saree.
• SHIBORI — TIED, NOT PRINTED
  The pattern is shibori: the cloth is tied and bound in sections and then dyed, so the bound parts resist the colour and stay white. Because it's done by hand rather than printed, the edges where green meets white are soft and feathered, the shapes are irregular, and no length comes out quite like the last. Yours will carry its own small variations.
• FABRIC & FEEL
  Fine mulmul cotton — airy and matte, soft against the skin, with a light drape that moves easily. It breathes in a way synthetic fabric doesn't, which is the whole point of a cotton saree in Indian summer. Like all good cotton, it softens with every wash.
• BORDER & TASSELS
  A broad band of solid lime green runs along the edge and across the pallu end, which closes in a row of chunky knotted tassels in three colours — olive, white and lime.
• BEST WORN FOR
  Work, daytime outings, house gatherings, and any long, warm day where you want to look considered without being uncomfortable.
• STYLING
  Styled here with a deep olive green blouse and oxidised silver jewellery — silver sits better against this green than gold, which tends to go brassy next to it. 
• CARE
  Cotton and hand-dyed, so treat it gently. Hand wash separately in cold water, dry in shade to keep the green bright, and use a cool iron while slightly damp.

  We wanted cottons in the range that ask nothing of you — no occasion, no careful handling on the day, no heavy drape — the ones you actually reach for on an ordinary hot day. A shibori mulmul does exactly that, and this particular green made it easy to start here. It's meant to be the first of a few, not a one-off.
